Where does the word LumaKa come from?
The LumaKa Pets Story - Who are we and how did we get started?
LumaKa Pets is a midwestern family-owned small business brand with our roots in a small northwestern suburb of Chicago called Long Grove. It used to be famous for antiquing and lots of tourist busses used to come to town. Today, it’s mostly famous for a small historic covered wooden bridge in the center of town that keeps getting destroyed by truck drivers that don’t pay attention to the warning signs about the maximum height of vehicles allowed!
We also have lots of summer festivals including Apple Fest, Chocolate Fest, Irish Fest, Strawberry Fest, October Fest, etc. . . . you get it!
Our family loves animals! When we started, we had two Golden Retriever boys – Leonardo (Leo) and Miles.
In July of this year, we adopted a 2 1/2 year-old Irish Setter / Golden mix named Cooper from a local shelter. We're excited to have Cooper join our family!
We share my office with three lady guinea pigs – Zonia, Milk and Summer
,
and have half a dozen fish tanks around our house including a saltwater reef tank in our dining room!
Our 9-year-old, Madeleine, feeds Milk, Summer and Zonia and likes to take them out of their 2 x 8 C&C habitat to visit the TV room while my wife, Erika, cleans their enclosure. We use our disposable litter boxes to keep the cage more organized and less messy. We all pitch in when it’s time to trim their nails!
Leonardo who is 11 and Miles who is 2 are best friends and like to visit and do “zoomies” (run around) with our neighbor’s Great Pyrenees (Nova) and Australian Shepherd (Nellie). Miles occasionally chases their cat (Twyla) up a tree too! Otherwise, they follow Erika around the house, and like any Golden Retrievers, crave constant attention and snacks!
The fish are pretty quiet, but are mesmerizing to look at. We’ve had lots of fry (baby fish) born at our house including Electric Blue Acaras, 100’s of Fancy Tail Guppies and some Cory Cats.
Our reef tank reminds us of our adventures snorkeling over reefs, with sea turtles, with whale sharks and in cenotes in Mexico. We love sea-life too!
When we launched LumaKa Ventures, given our love for animals, we knew the first brand we had to launch was LumaKa Pets. So here we are!
Our goal at LumaKa Pets is to curate and offer a unique selection of products to simplify and enhance life with our beloved animal friends and pets. We look for safe, environmentally friendly products that simplify caring for our animal friends, enhance the time we spend with them, and help us become better more responsible and loving animal caregivers. You won’t find shock collars, harmful chemicals, or other products that would be inconsistent with this philosophy. We’ve started with a few simple products and hope to add many more soon so be sure to sign up for our emails to be notified every time we launch a new product! We’ll also try to provide some informative articles in our Blogs to help us all become more knowledgeable responsible animal caregivers. Along the way, we’ll have some fun too!
